Veterinary Surgical Care

Advancements in veterinary care mean that surgical procedures are far safer than ever before and, in most cases, recovery times are significantly reduced. Town & Country Animal Hospital carries a complete surgery suite and is dedicated to providing your pet with the highest quality care and most compassionate approach. This includes the most up-to-date pain management protocols, advanced monitoring equipment and the safest anesthesia available, all under the supervision of our highly trained technical staff.

Your Pet's Surgery

Veterinary Surgical CareWe understand that surgery is not an easy experience for you and your pet. At Town & Country Animal Hospital we strive to ensure your pet's surgical procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. This includes providing our clients with a clear understanding of why a particular procedure is necessary, what the procedure entails, proper post-operative care, and conveying any other information you may need to feel comfortable that you are making the right choice for your pet.

Town & Country Animal Hospital also encourages you to come in prior to making a final decision on surgery to tour our surgical suite and meet our staff. Our Doctors will describe the procedure, advise you on the recommended level of patient support, and explain why those specific steps are necessary.

During your tour, you will see that our surgical services are extensive and performed in a state-of-the-art surgical suite. We are equipped with the sophisticated monitors, surgical equipment and choices of anesthetic protocols one would expect in a human hospital. Additionally, our Doctors have more than 25 years of experience in general surgery, which range from orthopedics to various soft tissue and medically necessary plastic/reconstructive surgeries.

The full range of surgeries is too numerous to list here, but include:

Orthopedic - These surgeries are of particular importance as the conditions they treat tend to be extremely common in our pets. Orthopedic surgeries performed include fracture repair, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, patellar luxation repair, femoral head ostectomy surgery, and osteochondritis (OCD) of the shoulder and elbow surgery.

Soft Tissue - These surgeries include exploratory, intestinal resection, liver lobectomy, cystotomy, gall bladder removal, tumor removal (skin, oral and internal), general surgery, and anal sacculectomy or more commonly know as "anal gland removal". Our Doctors are also capable of performing numerous specialty surgeries that in many other veterinary clinics would be referred out to specialists. We do, however, maintain close working relationships with a number of fine specialty centers in our area for unique or exceptional cases.

Anesthesia & Monitoring

Veterinary Surgical CareAnesthesia and cardiovascular monitoring are important, integral aspects of every surgery. For this reason, Town & Country Animal Hospital provides the best and most advanced anesthetic administration and cardiovascular monitoring equipment and protocols available.

Anesthesia is individualized for your pet based on a number of factors, which includes the type of procedure, his or her preexisting conditions, blood test values, age, breed, and prior anesthetic experience.

During anesthesia and surgery, your pet is constantly monitored by a trained veterinary technician using our advanced monitoring system. The system helps us continuously monitor your pet's arterial oxygen level, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and core body temperature.

Pain Management

Pain management is an important component of your pet's surgery. At Town & Country Animal Hospital, we know that animals experience pain and discomfort in much the same way that humans do. Therefore, we believe that recognizing and alleviating pain in animals is the essence of good patient care. The more comfortable your pet is, the faster he or she will heal.

Our protocols are tailored to the individual needs of your pet. Premedication, post and after-care medication are used in all surgical cases and will vary depending on the procedure being performed. At discharge, we may also send additional pain management medication home with you and your pet after providing a thorough explanation of its proper use and dosage.
