Laboratory Services

Laboratory ServicesLaboratory testing can help your veterinarian understand the status of your pet's health and its internal systems, which are hard to assess with a physical examination alone. Test results are used to accurately monitor your pet's overall health as well as detect the presence of any underlying diseases.

Town & Country Animal Hospital has a fully equipped, state-of-the-art lab capable in many instances of providing test results in mere minutes. We recommend that all dogs and cats undergo laboratory testing at least every year. For pets in their senior years, we recommend laboratory testing every six months.

Laboratory testing at Town & Country Animal Hospital includes:

Complete Blood Cell Count - A CBC test helps in the diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections, anemia-a condition present in numerous diseases-clotting problems, and other abnormalities of the blood.

Chemistry Profile - A chemistry profile is a screen for how well the individual organs are functioning and indicates the presence of disease. Abnormal results suggest systemic disorders such as diabetes, kidney disease, pancreatitis and liver disease.

Thyroid Hormone Test - This is used to evaluate thyroid gland function. Hyperthyroidism is a very common and treatable in both cats and dogs, but if left undiagnosed it is a potentially fatal disease, especially for older cats. The signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism include cause weight gain, sluggishness, hair loss, excessive shedding, and recurrent skin conditions.

Urinalysis - Macroscopic and microscopic evaluations are used as an index of kidney function as well as an all-purpose screen for systemic diseases and infections. The presence of blood, crystals, and/or bacteria in the urine may indicate infection, stones or a urinary tract infection.

Laboratory ServicesParasite Evaluation - This is a microscopic examination of your pet's feces used to confirm the presence of intestinal parasites, such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and giardia. This test can also provide important information about many different kinds of health problems such as internal bleeding, disorders of the pancreas and difficulties with digestion.
